Childrens Self Defence & Personal Safety Training

Personal Safety Training for Kids
Childrens Self Defence Training is a very sensitive area. It has to be approached sensitively & professionally. Sensitively, because as much as you want the children to appreciate the importance of awareness & stranger=danger skills you don't want them feeling scared & having nightmares. Professionally, because the techniques presented have to be selected so they are workable by the particular age group of children on the course (just as adults & children need to be taught different techniques in different ways, so do different age groups of children), & because as much as the physical techniques need to work effectively they also need to cause as little damage to the assailant as is practicable.
Mark Davies is one of the most renowned experts on what is known as Reality Based Self Defence, & is called upon to perform seminars on his methods Internationally. He has developed specialised self defence & personal safety methods for children of different ages, which are taught in a way that is fun & 'non scary' at the same time as being informative & imparting life saving knowledge & skills.
Stranger = Danger Training for young children
Our Stranger = Danger training is aimed at younger children in Primary 1 through to around Primary 4 ages. The aim of our Stranger = Danger course is to impart personal safety knowledge & skills in children, giving them the knowledge they need to stay safe from adult predators. The course is performed in a way that is fun & doesn't frighten the children, but the messages contained in the material are very powerful; & are in fact concepts that older people very often forget!
We start off by introducing the children to what our definition of a stranger actually is, & get them to realise that they cannot tell whether a person is good or bad by the way they look. The group learns about 'lures' & how a stranger might use them, & learns how to say "no" & stay safe. We introduce them to our 'stop stance', & get them working on some fun drills to teach them how to react to an adult who scares them or tries to touch/grab them. We don't do physical self defence techniques on this course, the physical part is all about avoidance & escape.
Childrens Self Defence training
Older children can REALLY benefit from self defence training! We actually feel that self defence & personal safety training should be a mandatory subject taught in secondary school. So why is it of so much benefit to youths? It's all about CONFIDENCE! When a child is confident it radiates out of them, & the confidence that knowing they can keep themselves safe transfers itself into other areas of their life too. Confidence & the knowledge that they can keep themselves safe also helps them to avoid negative things like weapons carrying.
Our Childrens Self Defence workshops are aimed at P5 through to S6 pupils. It is a particularly valuable workshop for older secondary school pupils, many of whom will be stepping out into the world as they move to attend university or college.
We tailor our kids self defence workshop content to the age group receiving the workshop, because different age groups face slightly different 'methods of attack'. We teach them preventive skills drawn from the skills taught to & used by Bodyguards & Intelligence Officers. Mark Davies was certified as a Close Protection Officer in 1989, & has worked in high risk VIP protection. He shares some of the 'tricks of the trade' so the children understand the importance of awareness, how to spot someone is watching or following them, how to spot danger ahead of time by being aware, & how to decide 'when to do something' about potential threats. On the physical side of the course the children learn simple & effective methods for dealing with the most common 'methods of attack' that they are likely to face. Once again, these techniques are specially selected for their stage of development so they are effective, but not excessive. Once again, the physical skills we teach are of little use to bullies in school or out of school because they are defensive in nature & cannot be used effectively as attacks.
